Social cohesion is high on the government’s agenda and class 4PK have been involved in a year long project to understand how to develop a shared set of values relating to the broad aims of British Values which are
- the rule of law
- individual liberty
- mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith
The children have been finding out about children from other parts of the UK which are very different in cultural tradition and ethnic origin. They undertook a number of activities to explore what is important to them as individual people and found that they shared many ideas of right and wrong and hopes and aspirations. In writing to each other, it opened their eyes to other ways of living and a greater understanding of each other as individuals. A really touching moment for some of our children was when the children from Shetland expressed concern and empathy for our pupils post Grenfell Tower fire and the terrorist acts in London. This was real evidence in action of crossing divides and common shared values. The children are hoping to share their personal value stories in sound files on the Kindred Spirits website.
